WELCOME

Built Green® Washington is a nonprofit cooperative representing local Built Green programs throughout the state of Washington. Built Green programs have been serving as a resource for Washington homebuilders and homeowners since 1996 and are among the most respected local green building programs in the nation.

Certification programs define green building for both the builders who construct homes and the buyers who purchase them. Built Green certification is your guarantee that accepted standards have been met to reduce the environmental impact of a home.

For builders, certifying homes to Built Green provides recognition for the quality work you do. It also gives you a definite sales advantage in today’s competitive market, including the ability to list your homes as Built Green certified with the Northwest Multiple Listing Service. For more information, visit the Builder Information page.

For homeowners, purchasing a Built Green certified home gives you the confidence that your home will cost less to operate, be healthier for you and your family, last longer, and have less impact on the environment than a typical home. For more information, visit the Homeowner Information page.

With careful planning and smart decisions, achieving Built Green certification is simple and cost-effective. By partnering with building industry experts, state and local government officials, and resources like Better Built NW, Built Green programs have made Washington a leader in building a sustainable future.

WHAT IS BUILT GREEN®?

Built Green programs encourage environmentally responsible building and construction by certifying homes that meet specific criteria. The Programs are administered by local home builders associations, using a checklist-based system. Various levels of certification are possible, Depending on the local program: typically, the higher levels require that the project be inspected and documented by a certified third-party verifier to ensure accuracy.

Each local Built Green program sets its own criteria for certification. Some programs only certify new single-family homes; some certify communities, remodels, and multi-family projects as well. For information on the program nearest you, visit the Overview of Programs page.

Projects that are certified through Built Green have demonstrated achievement in several areas of environmental responsibility:

  • Preserving natural processes through responsible site and water management;
  • Lowering operating costs through energy-efficient equipment and systems;
  • Reducing toxins and pollutants for a healthier indoor environment;
  • Minimizing waste by careful materials selection and jobsite recycling.
